At Givens Machine Systems, we design and manufacture purpose-built Quality Check and testing equipment for your mass-produced products, which often require conformity to specific ANSI or CSA standards. We also create machines that test specific quality requirements set by a customer’s internal standards and sometimes must accommodate over one hundred different part configurations.

If you have a specific need for one of these custom machines or would like to know more about our products, you can contact one of our sales reps here. We would be happy to discuss how we can help you.

We serve all industries in Canada and United States, from automotive to pipe and fitting. Some common applications we have created custom machines for are:

  • Drop and Impact Tests
  • Sustained Pressure and Stress Tests
  • Bend Testing
  • Destructive Testing

All our machines can be equipped with various levels of automation, where an operator inserts a part into a purpose-built fixture, closes the door, and presses a button on an HMI to initiate the test. Let a PLC do the work for you by utilizing pneumatic, hydraulic, and servo/stepper-driven systems, recording results in real-time using load cells and other sensitive measuring devices. This ensures repeatable and accurate tests with data recording to a plant network or writing to a CSV file via USB. We also normally provide live readouts to operators on an HMI to show timers, forces and pressures, as well as showing pass/fail results immediately after a test.

For sustained tests requiring longer cycles, sometimes lasting 100 hours or more, our machines can sense if a part has failed and end the test early with a notification to operators, saving time and allowing you to move to the next test sooner.

This automated testing machine was designed to perform vacuum and water pressure leak tests on various diameters of pipe and fitting combinations to ensure that they meet CSA and ANSI standards for watertightness. Once a pipe and fitting were loaded, the operation of the machine was completely automated, through the use of an HMI and PLC, to perform four to six tests without needing intervention.

The test fixture was made to hold over 100 different fittings by using adjustable stops to plug up to three fitting openings that protruded at various angles. Both vacuum and pressurized water tests are performed on this machine by using an on-board vacuum generator and an inlet for regular municipal water supply. The machine used various automatic valves to control the pressure and vacuum while filling and draining with water. Pressure and vacuum sensors were used to detect whether a leak was present in the part.

In addition to the complex plumbing, a hydraulic and mechanical system to automatically apply shear, deflection and crushing forces to the seal of the fitting around the pipe. Here we used laser distance sensors to measure the amount of shear and deflection present in the pipes to adhere to strict quality standards.

This machine was made for a PVC fitting manufacturer to test the strength of welded plastic fittings. It uses a pneumatic cylinder to pull on the fitting, usually until the part fails. A load cell measures the maximum pull force through the test and records the data to a USB stick for the customers’ tracking purposes.

This test machine can also be adjusted by the user to accommodate about 100 different fitting sizes and styles, like Tees, Wyes and Elbows. The operator loads a part into the machine and enters its SKU number on the HMI screen. The operator then closes the door and presses the start button to begin the test. The doors automatically lock during the test to protect the operator. During the test, the screen shows the current pulling force and shows whether the part passed or failed based on the PLC’s preprogrammed criteria for that specific part.

The white table can be raised and lowered with a push button and stepper motor to assist with heavier part loading and setup. The machine is fully enclosed with Lexan panels for easy viewing of the parts during testing while simultaneously ensuring the safety of the surrounding workers.
